This stunning Austin Healey 3000 MkI Two-Seater (BN7) is an original right-hand drive UK car rebuilt in 2012 and upgraded to a particularly excellent specification for stylish and spirited fast road touring. Finished in Nardo Grey with Navy Blue interior, this example was despatched from the Austin factory on 15 February 1960 to D.J. Shepherd & Company, Middlesex with the registration 9885 AR – retained with the car today.
Under the bonnet this Healey has a wonderful MKIII fast road specification engine which benefits from a unleaded conversion, a higher lift camshaft, upgraded pistons, full balanced crankshaft and internals, lightened and balanced flywheel, harmonic crankshaft dampener, a rear main oil seal upgrade and aluminium backplate, fast road fuel pump, 123 electronic ignition system, larger 2” MkIII carburettors, 6 branch manifold and large bore exhaust, large core radiator plus alternator conversion and high torque stater motor. This extremely high specification engine produced excellent power and a much boarder powerband whilst benefitting from being substantially smoother with the balancing. Power is delivered more efficiently to the rear wheels through a modern 5-speed gearbox which still has a period correct feel but with a much smoother, faster gearchange.
To manage this power the car has upgraded MkIII brakes, polybushed suspension, wider chrome centrelock wire wheels and grippier radial tyres.
Externally this brawn is supported by lots of factory works styling upgrades including a wonderfully executed works style front grille with air scoops and Nardo Grey colour coded mesh inserts, lightweight composite wings, works style boot lid with Lucas rear spotlamp, front Lucas twin spotlamps on Denish Welch aluminium brackets, a de-bumpered body and lockable Monza fuel cap.
The interior has received further consideration to a sporting aesthetic with the dashboard receiving Smiths black dial gauges (as fitted to works cars to avoid the dazzle of the gold gauges), a Moto-Lita Derrington wooden steering wheel, an additional battery gauge with the remainder of the cockpit remaining comfortable for long journeys with re-trimmed original seats in Navy with White piping. The car does have removable seatbelts included and a hazard switch, USB power points and Maserati air horns have been added for extra niceties.
Ownership history of this car is good, prior to 2010 the car was owned by one owner since the 1970s. In 2010 the car was purchased by Roger Byford a past chairman of the Austin Healey club who restored the car. Roger Byford is a collector, racer and rally driver and concours judge of Austin Healeys which we think is evident when looking at the nicely considered modifications applied to this wonderful car.
